As attendance continues to slump SeaWorld San Diego announces a new ride/attraction in order to try and boost attendance at the park. This ride is going to use a “significant” portion of the budget that had been set aside for the expansion of the orca tanks.
I don’t believe orca should be held in captivity. It should be responsibly phased out and current captive animals to be retired to natural sea pens.
But what I don’t understand is the anti-captivity movement’s instance on blocking SW’s efforts to expand their tanks. YES SeaWorld was only doing it as a PR stunt, but it doesn’t change the fact that more room would improve the quality of life for the whales the parks currently house.
The anti-captivity community wants to stop captive breeding, I am all for that. But why attach it as a condition to improving space for the whales? It was a foreseeable consequence that SeaWorld would choose to abandon its expansion efforts in favor of keeping their breeding program. Why force SeaWorld into a situation where they are forced to choose to between expanding facilities or breeding, we all knew which one they would pick.
I don’t count the defeat of the Blue World Project as a victory, we lost the chance to make the whale’s lives just a little more bearable.
