March 12, Sunday
A young female orca stranded on Sunday. Members of the Patea community spent hours pouring water over the whale as they tried to dig a channel for the whale to swim out. They used everything from shovels to a backhoe. They hoped it would be enough for the whale to float and free itself when high tide came at 2am Monday morning.
“Ngarewa-packer said as you looked in the whale’s eyes you could tell she was spent, that there was nothing left. We got out of the water about 1:30am she didn’t have any strength in her. Everyone did what was humanly possible”
The young whale died overnight and was buried on the beach.
